Treatment Philosophy

Ms. Fischer is committed to providing evidence-based interventions for children with autism and other developmental disabilities. Decades of research support the use of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) in the treatment of developmental disabilities, and numerous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of early intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI) for y

oung children with autism (e.g., Fenske, Zalenski, Krantz, and McClannahan, 1985; Howard, Sparkman, Cohen, Green, and Stanislaw, 2005; Lovaas, 1987). While the outcome of EIBI varies for each child, this type of treatment increases the likelihood that a child will achieve independence in a general education setting.

The following are particular intervention practices Ms. Fischer utilizes:
•    Developmentally sequenced and individualized treatment goals
•    Errorless teaching procedures
•    Effective use of down times (e.g., incidental teaching, promoting spontaneous language in the natural environment, generalization training, etc.)
•    Focus on “behavioral cusps,” or key skills (e.g., attending, generalized imitation, functional communication) that will open the door to new learning and reinforcement opportunities (see Rosalez-Ruiz & Baer, 1997)
•    Data-based intervention
•    Pairing others with reinforcement (adults and peers)
•    Structured peer play

The intensity of an EIBI program is a key feature that affects outcome. Based on the individual child’s needs, Ms. Fischer writes goals and objectives that guide the intervention. Using these goals and objectives, Ms. Fischer creates a program summary for each child that is updated with each consultation visit. The program summary gives an outline of current and projected programs for each child, and provides a framework for the creation of data sheets, stimuli, and other materials used in a child’s program. This system allows for efficient delivery of the intervention and monitoring of progress, which adds to the intensity of the intervention.

In addition, Ms. Fischer works with each child’s team to maintain the intensity of the intervention through consistent monitoring of progress and frequent staff and parent training. Ms. Fischer trains staff using a series of workshops, and provides ongoing one-on-one training using feedback forms and evaluations of competency. Using this staff training system, she helps parents make staffing decisions.

Given that the field of applied behavior analysis is constantly evolving through ongoing research, it is vital that behavior analysts are aware of current developments in the field. Through continuing education, membership in professional associations, collaboration with colleagues, and review of current literature, Ms. Fischer strives to remain abreast of advancements in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis so that she can provide the most effective intervention possible to her clients.
